Church urges prayer and aid as devastating floods affect more than 350,000 people
NEW DELHI (Indian Catholic News) — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed “deep anguish and profound solidarity” with the people of Punjab and Haryana suffering from catastrophic floods, described as the worst in decades. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this time of immense suffering,” the bishops said in a statement released Sept. 4.
Reports indicate extensive damage across the region. “The relentless rains and swollen rivers have affected all 23 districts of Punjab, impacting over 3.5 lakh (350,000) people,” the CBCI noted. “The agricultural sector, which sustains the livelihoods of millions, has been crippled, with more than 3.7 lakh acres (149,733.688 hectares) of crops submerged and destroyed.” Thousands have been left without homes or livelihoods, facing what the bishops called “a long and arduous road to recovery.”
“In this hour of crisis,” the statement continued, “the CBCI calls on all Catholics across India to join in fervent prayer for our brothers and sisters in Punjab. We pray for the strength and resilience of all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. We also pray for the safety and success of all the rescue workers who are tirelessly working to save lives.”
The bishops also made a nationwide appeal for practical support. “CBCI appeals to all Christians and people of good will to come forward with tangible assistance. Your generosity, whether through food, clean water, medicine, or shelter, can make a meaningful difference to those who have been left with nothing,” the statement said.
To ensure effective aid delivery, the CBCI urged dioceses, institutions and individuals to route all contributions through Caritas India, the Church’s humanitarian arm. “Caritas has already activated its networks to coordinate relief efforts and rehabilitation work,” the bishops said.
Donations can be made to Caritas India, Account No. 0153053000007238, South Indian Bank Ltd, IFSC Code: SIBL0000153, 22 Regal Building, Connaught Place, New Delhi – 110001.
“The Catholic Church stands ready to serve the people of Punjab in this difficult hour and during the long journey of recovery and rebuilding ahead,” the CBCI affirmed. “Let us keep Punjab in our prayers.”
