Indian bishops urge prayers for peace as Middle East tensions escalate

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India voices alarm at rising violence involving Iran and the wider region and calls on Christians to pray for peace during the Lenten season.

NEW DELHI (Indian Catholic News) — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has invited Christians across the country to pray earnestly for peace, expressing deep concern over escalating tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Iran.

In a statement released March 3, the conference said it was “deeply concerned over the escalating tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Iran,” lamenting the human cost of the violence and urging world leaders to pursue dialogue.

“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives, especially the vulnerable children caught in the midst of these hostilities,” the statement said.

The bishops added that their “heartfelt prayers go out to the families mourning their loved ones,” while praying “for the swift and full recovery of all those who have been injured.”

The appeal comes as the United States and Israel continue large-scale strikes on Iran, with the conflict widening to include the Gulf region as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

The conference called on international leaders to step back from further escalation and work together to resolve the crisis peacefully.

“The CBCI urgently appeals to the leaders of all nations involved to come together in constructive dialogue, resolve the current crisis, and consciously choose peace over violence,” the statement said.

Cardinal Anthony Poola of Hyderabad, president of the conference, warned that military action would only deepen suffering.

“Violence and conflict only breed further suffering and despair. We urge all global leaders to prioritize human dignity and work collaboratively towards an amicable resolution,” he said.

“True strength lies not in the use of force, but in the unwavering pursuit of lasting peace.”

The bishops also linked their appeal to the Lenten season, traditionally marked by prayer, fasting and repentance in the Christian calendar.

“As we journey through the Holy Season of Lent—a time of deep spiritual reflection, fasting, and penance—the CBCI invites all Christians in India to pray earnestly for peace in the world,” the statement said.

“Let us unite our hearts in asking for divine grace to heal the afflicted regions and bring harmony to all communities.”
