KOCHI, Kerala (Indian Catholic News) — The Major Archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church has called on Christians to remain steadfast in hope amid global conflict, persecution and suffering in his 2026 Easter message.
In the message released ahead of Easter celebrations, Major Archbishop Raphael Thattil of Ernakulam-Angamaly described the resurrection of Christ as “the greatest leap in human history” and the foundation of Christian faith.
“Christ’s resurrection is not an ordinary event in history, but the greatest quantum leap in human history,” the message said, quoting Pope Benedict XVI. “It is the victory of love over the false illusion that the world can be transformed through violence.”
The message, issued April 4, said Christians around the world were celebrating Easter in remembrance of “the resurrection of Christ, which led human history towards light and eternal life.”
Quoting St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, the archbishop stressed the centrality of the resurrection to Christianity: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”
The statement said the resurrection was not a return to ordinary life but “an entry into a new state beyond death,” adding that it reveals death is not the end but “the doorway to eternal union with God.”
The message also cited St. Augustine, saying: “God has promised us not merely resurrection, but eternal communion with Him.”
Peace amid suffering
Reflecting on current global crises, the archbishop said the modern world was passing through “great trials,” pointing to wars, displacement and growing persecution of Christians.
“The cries of the helpless rising from war zones are heartbreaking,” the message said. “Intolerance and persecution against Christians are increasing across the world.”
Quoting the Gospel of John, the message encouraged believers to remain courageous: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
The archbishop also recalled the words of Pope John Paul II, saying: “The future of humanity lies not in wars or violence, but in life and peace. The sun of hope will rise over the tombs of injustice and death.”
The message urged Christians to accept the peace offered by the risen Christ and work to overcome “walls of division and hatred.”
It concluded by affirming that Christian hope is rooted in “God’s promises and the resurrection of Christ,” adding: “The tomb is empty; Christ is risen, and He remains with us even today.”
