Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala (Indian Catholic News) —The Syro Malankara Catholic Church reports nearly half a million faithful, with strong clerical presence, vast parish networks, and extensive educational and charitable institutions nationwide.
Statistics uploaded on the Syro Malankara Catholic Church website has reported a vibrant and growing community, with 465,759 members. The Church is led by one Major Archbishop Catholicos — Cardinal Baselios Cleemis (Isaac) Thottunkal of Trivandrum — supported by 12 bishops. Its ecclesial structure includes one Major Archieparchy, one archeparchy, and nine eparchies.
Clerical strength remains robust, with 766 eparchial priests serving across parishes and mission stations. Religious congregations contribute significantly, including 206 priests from the Order of the Imitation of Christ (OIC), 35 priests from other congregations, and 27 religious brothers.
Women religious form a vital part of the Church’s mission, with 813 sisters from the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ (SIC), 917 from the Daughters of Mary (DM), and 330 from other congregations.
The Church oversees 1,196 parishes and mission stations, ensuring pastoral care reaches communities across India and beyond.
Institutions in education, charity, and social service
The Syro Malankara Catholic Church has invested in education and social service. Ecclesiastical institutions include one major seminary, 10 minor seminaries, 10 pastoral centres, five retreat centres, one renewal centre, four priests’ homes, eight social service societies, one convention centre, and two theological training centres.
Educational outreach is extensive, with 42 colleges, eight training colleges, eight technical institutions, 52 higher secondary schools, 86 high schools, 75 upper primary schools, 125 lower primary schools, 89 nursery schools, three special schools, and 22 boarding and hostel facilities.
Charitable initiatives are equally significant. The Church operates 10 orphanages, four boys’ homes, 15 hospitals and health centres, 19 homes for the aged, nine rehabilitation centres, nine palliative care centres, and 11 homes for the mentally challenged. Other services include six printing presses and seven book stalls, supporting communication and outreach.
Publications remain a strong medium of engagement, with 16 eparchial and 14 religious publications circulating among the faithful.
