NEW DELHI (Indian Catholic News) — Catholic bishops, offering earnest prayers, stand with bereaved families in profound grief after the tragic cruise accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, urging authorities to support victims and review safety protocols.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India said it “expresses its deepest sorrow over the tragic cruise accident” that claimed lives after a storm capsized a tourist vessel.
“Our thoughts, sympathies, and earnest prayers are with the bereaved families during this period of profound grief,” the May 2 statement said.
The bishops added, “We urge the authorities concerned to provide all support to the affected families and call for a thorough review of water safety protocols on tourist vessels.”
They also prayed for “the swift and safe recovery of the individuals who are still missing.”
Media reports police saying that the death toll in the Jabalpur boat tragedy has risen to 13 after the last body was recovered from the dam May 3. Of the 41 identified passengers on board, 28 were rescued.
The roughly 20-year-old vessel, operated by the Madhya Pradesh state tourism department, capsized during a storm on April 30 evening, and all 13 missing persons have now been accounted for, police said.
