Bishop links true independence with diversity, dignity for all

AGARTALA, Tripura (Indian Catholic News) — A Catholic bishop in northeastern India says the country’s greatest strength is its diversity and that becoming a developed nation must mean dignity and opportunity for every citizen.

Holy Cross Bishop Lumen Monteiro of Agartala‘s Independence Day message was published in the August 2026 issue of the diocese’s Link bulletin, recalled India’s independence from British rule on Aug. 15, 1947, and the sacrifices of leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

“Independence marked the beginning of a new era of democracy and self-governance,” the message says, adding that Independence Day traditions “remind us of our history and strengthen our sense of national identity.”

Bishop Monteiro notes that 79 years after independence, India has become “one of the world’s largest democracies” and has made progress in science, technology, education, health care, agriculture, infrastructure and economic development.

He also points to achievements in “digital innovation, space exploration, and entrepreneurship” as evidence of the country’s resilience and potential.

But the bishop says development must go beyond economic growth.

“The journey towards becoming a truly developed and inclusive nation is still ongoing,” he says in his message. The challenges, it adds, are “opportunities to work together and build a stronger nation.”

The message refers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047—a developed India by the centenary of our independence.”

“This vision is not merely about becoming a larger economy or building taller buildings,” Bishop Monteiro says. “It is about creating a nation where growth is inclusive, opportunities are accessible, institutions are strong, innovation flourishes, and every citizen can live with dignity.”

Unity does not mean uniformity

Bishop Monteiro stresses that building such a nation cannot be left to governments alone.

“It requires the energy, creativity, and commitment” of citizens, who have a role in “respecting the law, protecting the environment, promoting harmony, and contributing to our communities.”

“The true spirit of independence lies not only in celebrating our freedom but also in fulfilling our responsibilities,” Bishop Monteiro says.

He identifies diversity as a defining national strength.

“India’s greatest strength is its diversity,” the bishop says. “Our country is home to many languages, cultures, traditions, and faiths.”

“Celebrating Independence Day should remind us that unity does not mean uniformity,” the message continues. “It means respecting one another despite our differences and working together for the common good.”

The bishop also calls for responsible use of technology, urging citizens to “verify information before sharing it,” avoid misinformation, communicate respectfully online and use digital platforms to promote “knowledge, innovation, and positive social change.”

“As we celebrate 79 years of independence, let us renew our commitment to the ideals that inspired our freedom movement,” the message says. “Let us dream boldly, work diligently, and serve selflessly.”

“If each of us contributes in our own way, we will help build an India that is more inclusive, innovative, sustainable, and compassionate.”
