JALANDHAR, Punjab (India Catholic News) — The Diocese of Jalandhar is encouraging Catholics to appreciate community leaders and pray for national, state and local authorities through a month long outreach initiative aimed at strengthening community relationships and promoting goodwill.
The initiative, titled the National Days of Prayer and Appreciation, calls on churches across India “to appreciate & express gratitude to those serving the community” and to “pray for the blessing of our nation and for all the authorities.” The programme is based on biblical passages including Genesis 12:2-3, Jeremiah 29:7 and 1 Timothy 2:1-2.
Reaching out to community leaders
According to the diocesan guidelines, September was designated as a preparation period, while October is focused on visits by church teams to community leaders at their workplaces. The document, published in the October issue of Christward, the diocesan bulletin, says the visits are intended to “appreciate and thank them and pray for them.”
The initiative has four stated objectives: mobilising church members to participate in outreach, demonstrating that the church seeks to “bless, pray and intercede for people in Authority,” creating goodwill within local communities and making church activities more open and understandable to the public.
The programme identifies a broad range of people for visits, including government officials, police officers, judges, magistrates, judicial officials, teachers, professors, health workers, government clerks and people serving the community through nongovernmental organisations.
Churches encouraged to organise visits
The guidelines outline a series of steps for churches, beginning with explaining the purpose of the initiative to congregations and forming teams of four or five members. Church leaders are also encouraged to help members identify community leaders “known to them personally.”
Catholics are then asked to contact the identified leaders, explain the initiative and request a suitable time for a visit. The document also recommends training and preparation before visits take place.
It further suggests that churches dedicate prayer during Sunday gatherings throughout October for community leaders, visiting teams and “the Leaders of the Nation, the State and the District.” Hearing reports from participants is expected to encourage wider involvement in the programme.
Focus on prayer and goodwill
The diocesan document says church members visiting leaders may express gratitude for their service to the community and pray for them, their work and their families. It adds that such engagement can help churches become “a reaching out community as God intends his church and people to be.”
The guidance also emphasizes conduct during visits, reminding participants that they should approach people “with a spirit of humility and love.” It instructs teams that “No extempore prayers should be done” and advises them to avoid “sensitive, political and communal issues” as well as negative or provocative remarks.
The initiative presents the outreach as an opportunity for churches to build relationships within their communities while expressing appreciation for those serving the public and offering prayers for civic and national leaders.
