Pope Leo XIV’s peace appeal gains support from India’s Catholic bishops

CCBI warns of grave humanitarian consequences as violence escalates, endorsing Pope Leo XIV’s appeal for dialogue, restraint and protection of innocent lives across the conflict-hit Middle East.

NEW DELHI (Indian Catholic News) — The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) has voiced strong support for Pope Leo XIV’s call for peace in the Middle East, warning of “grave humanitarian consequences” and urging global leaders to prioritise dialogue and protect civilians.

In a statement issued April 14, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) expressed “prayerful solidarity with Pope Leo XIV, endorsing his urgent appeal for peace amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.”

The bishops underscored what they described as the moral urgency of the pope’s message, calling it a “timely reminder to the global community to choose dialogue over confrontation” as violence and instability deepen across the region.

“As violence, fear, and uncertainty continue to grip the region, the CCBI noted that the pope’s voice remains a beacon of hope, urging nations to pursue peace through diplomatic and humanitarian means,” the statement said.

The CCBI highlighted the pope’s repeated calls to world leaders to end hostilities and protect civilians. It pointed to “the grave humanitarian consequences of the ongoing conflict, including widespread displacement, suffering, and loss of life, particularly among the most vulnerable.”

Amid rising geopolitical tensions and strong public reactions to the pope’s appeal, the bishops called for restraint and responsible leadership. “Differences must be resolved through dialogue and mutual respect, not through aggression or inflammatory rhetoric,” the statement emphasised.

Joining episcopal conferences worldwide, the CCBI urged all parties involved in the conflict “to immediately end violence, uphold human dignity, and respect international humanitarian law.” It also appealed for “unhindered humanitarian assistance to affected populations and sincere efforts toward a just and lasting peace.”

The statement extended beyond political leaders, calling on the faithful and all people of goodwill to respond spiritually to the crisis. The bishops urged communities to “intensify their prayers for peace in the region, for wisdom among world leaders, and for the protection of innocent lives.”

Reaffirming the Church’s broader mission, the CCBI said it stands in solidarity with those suffering the effects of war and remains committed to promoting justice and reconciliation.

Echoing the Gospel, the statement concluded with the call: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God” (Mt 5:9).
