Indian cardinal joins Vatican communications dicastery

CCBI says appointment of Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão marks a significant moment for India’s Catholics and strengthens Asian Church voices in global ecclesial communication and engagement.

NEW DELHI (Indian Catholic News) — The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India said Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão’s appointment to the Vatican Dicastery for Communication marks a significant moment and will strengthen the Indian and Asian Church’s global voice.

In an April 9 statement, the CCBI said the move highlights the “increasing contribution of Indian Church leaders at the Vatican level”, particularly in shaping communication and engagement in an increasingly digital world.

The Holy See Press Office in its April 9 bulletin said Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão of Goa and Daman, president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, as one of the members of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication.

Cardinal Ferrão also serves as president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences for the 2025-2028 term, placing him among the most prominent Catholic leaders in the region. His appointment to the dicastery, the bishops’ conference noted, “reflects the growing representation of the Indian Church in the universal Church’s leadership structures.”

The Dicastery for Communication plays a central role in overseeing the Vatican’s media and communications strategy, including news services, digital platforms and public outreach.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the dicastery “oversees the entire communications network of the Apostolic See and, with structural unity and respecting the relative operational characteristics, unifies the Holy See’s activities in the area of communication.”

“It does so in order that the whole system responds in an integrated way to the needs of the Church’s evangelizing mission in a context characterized by the presence and development of digital media, and by the factors of convergence and interactivity,” it added.

The CCBI described Cardinal Ferrão’s appointment as “a significant moment for the Catholic community in India,” noting that it “underscores the importance of effective communication in advancing the Church’s mission in today’s digital age.”

It said that Cardinal Ferrão’s inclusion “is expected to bring valuable pastoral and regional insights, particularly from the Asian context, into the Church’s global communication strategy.”

The statement noted that his new responsibility “is likely to further strengthen the voice of the Indian and Asian Church in global ecclesial conversations.”

Other newly appointed members of the dicastery include cardinals and bishops from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, reflecting the Vatican’s emphasis on global representation in its communications leadership.
