Hyderabad Archdiocese erects new parish honouring Mother Teresa

St. Mother Teresa Parish, Bachupally was needed for effective spiritual care amid a growing Catholic presence in the Hyderabad suburb.

HYDERABAD, Telangana (Indian Catholic News) — Hyderabad Archdiocese now has a new parish named after St. Teresa of Calcutta, popularly known as Mother Teresa.

“The community of the faithful residing in the territory of Bachupally is hereby erected as a new parish, to be known as St. Mother Teresa Parish, Bachupally with effect from 13th May, 2026,” Cardinal Anthony Poola of Hyderabad stated in a decree.

The decree explained that “the faithful residing in and around Bachupally [a fast‑growing suburb of Hyderabad], have experienced significant spiritual and pastoral growth” and that “the new parish is formed by bifurcating a defined portion from Immaculate Conception Church, Kukatpally.”

It further noted that “the vast territorial extent and increasing Catholic population of Immaculate Conception Church, Kukatpally have made it pastorally necessary to provide more effective spiritual care.”

New parish strengthens Catholic presence

Cardinal Poola directed that “the newly erected St. Mother Teresa Parish, Bachupally shall form part of the Bowenpally Deanery and participate in all its pastoral structures and activities.” Exact territorial boundaries will be determined upon recommendations of the Bowenpally Deanery and approved later by the archbishop, he said in the decree.

The decree named Father Mallavarapu Sundar as the first parish priest of St. Mother Teresa Church and shall assume pastoral responsibility in accordance with the norms of Canon Law.

The decree also clarified cemetery arrangements: “The existing cemetery of Immaculate Conception Church, Kukatpally shall serve as a common cemetery for both Kukatpally and Bachupally parishes. The administration and maintenance of the cemetery shall remain under Kukatpally Parish.”

The decree was signed at the Archbishop’s House, Secunderabad, on April 19, 2026, by Cardinal Anthony Poola and by the Hyderabad Archdiocesan Chancellor Father Victor Emmanuel.
